Book Review: Bootstrap Marketing by Mike Morrison

I sat and read this book in one session, I was enjoying it so much I didn’t want to put it down! But it’s a business book I hear you cry, yes, but it’s a business book written for the small business owner in a small business owners language.

Everything about this book fits into what I have been trying to do and share since I started my business. Mike talks about collaboration, about sharing knowledge, and does it without sounding like a guru or one of those ‘expert’ books that make you feel you’re doing everything wrong and can only succeed by sending the author money for their fantastic programme.

Mike is very honest in the book, sharing the mistakes he made in the early days, and lets be honest, we’ve all made mistakes.

I met Mike at a networking event a few years ago and never realised that he was just like me, a sole trader. It wasn’t anything he said, it was just an assumption on my part I suspect, but for some reason I pictured Mike in an office with a team of staff. It was refreshing to read that he’s a one man band who utilises outsourcing and works with both a Virtual Assistant and a call answering service. He even uses Capsule CRM. This guy is switched on! The more I read of the book the more I identified with what he was saying, and found the advice he was giving was practical and affordable, which is key when you are a small business.

If you’ve ever been involved with 4Networking then you’ll recognise a lot of the people that Mike talks about in the book; the one thing that they all have in common is that they are small business owners.

It was good to know that there were several areas where I am doing what I should be doing, I’m getting that right, however, there are areas I can improve on, without breaking the bank.

The book covers everything from networking, social media, websites, business cards and even your initial print requirements.

If you’re serious about your small business then book should be on your ‘must read’ list.
